There are so many things to consider when you start to think about getting divorced. The list of things to do and issues to resolve can seem endless. If you have children their custody and support will be two of the biggest and most important issues to resolve. Spousal support, or alimony, will also be a very important task to take care of, as will dividing your property. Each of these issues can also include several related issues as well, so you will definitely have a lot to think about.
Social Media Is Part of Life
One thing that might not have ever crossed your mind is social media. So what do social media accounts have to do with divorce? In this day and age, social media is a very prevalent part of just about everyone’s lives. Most people who have a social media account don’t go a single day without checking their account. The fact is social media has become such a common part of life that it is now woven into our society and part of who we are. That’s precisely why it is now becoming a more common part of divorce.
Pitfalls of Social Media in Divorce
There are many pitfalls that come with social media accounts, in particular when you are going through a divorce. Often what you do on your social media accounts can provide evidence for the other side to use against you. In other words, they can provide the other side with ammunition to use against you in the divorce settlement, including child custody, spousal support and even the property division. During divorce, social media accounts and are simply a liability. Also, when you are in a custody dispute, everything you do is under a microscope.
Online Battle
Another key component of social media in divorce is the role that social media can play in a couple’s relationship. For example, if you’re going through divorce it is not a good idea to post anything on a social media site that could be used against you in the settlement process. Any photos of you living it up could give the impression that you have plenty of money and therefore could pay more, or not need as much, in spousal or child support. Likewise, it’s not a good idea to attack your soon-to-be ex on social media before the divorce is final because it could make you look bad. Another thing to watch out for are photos of you drinking alcohol. While it may be completely innocent and simply social, it can still cause you aggravation in court if someone accuses you having a drinking issue.
