In most instances when couples with children decide to divorce they will end up facing a child custody battle at least to some degree. Many times, these situations can include both parents fighting over who will have physical and legal custody over their children. These battles can turn very ugly and have negative effects on both the kids and the parents. That’s why in some cases, couples in unhappy marriages will simply choose to stay together solely for the sake of their children.

While it can be difficult for kids to overcome divorce, the fact is divorce does not have to be the end of a happy life for children. The truth is children can survive and overcome their parents splitting up. They can be happy, successful and well adjusted despite being children of divorce. According to research from development psychologist Mavis Hetherington, nearly 80 percent of all kids whose parents divorce end up doing well in life.

In fact, research shows that most kids adapt well to divorce and they really don’t experience any long-lasting negative effects on their social adjustment, their education or their mental well-being. There are several keys to children overcoming the negative effects of divorce and being successful, but the primary ingredient is to have a healthy, supportive relationship with both parents. So, even though it can be hard for children when their parents divorce, if they are able to maintain a good relationship with both of their parents they have a much better chance of becoming well adjusted and happy adults.

No one wants to go through a divorce and when kids are involved that can make the decision to go through with divorce even tougher. However, staying in an unhappy and unhealthy marriage solely for the sake of your kids is usually not a good choice for your long-term well-being. Kids are resilient and although they will almost certainly experience some difficult adjustments, that does not mean they can’t overcome those adjustments and learn to be happy and productive children and adults.
