Although most people might still consider the traditional family to be made up of a father and mother and children, the fact is in this day and age, there are many other types of family units. Many families consist of one parent, while other families consist of same-sex parents. Simply put, there are all kinds of different family units today and each one has its own unique dynamic. Although society has become more accepting of these nontraditional family units, many times alternative families are ostracized or do not receive the same privileges as traditional family units.

At the Women’s Divorce & Family Law Group, we do not believe in discrimination against any kind of family, traditional or not. While many states still don’t allow same-sex marriage, fortunately Illinois does now legally recognize these types of unions, and our law firm has been and remains at the forefront in Illinois law for civil unions and same-sex divorces. Indeed, our law firm filed Illinois’ first same-sex civil union ever! That means if you have a family law issue that involves a nontraditional or alternative family unit the Women’s Divorce & Family Law Group can help you.

There are many unique issues that can arise for same-sex couples that you might not be aware of. For example, although many same-sex couples have now been married, there are still others who want to get divorced. When a same-sex couple wants to divorce, there can be complications that might not occur when traditional couples divorce. For example, determining child custody can be complicated because only one of the parents can be the biological father or mother. In many cases, the couple has adopted the children and in other cases, one parent has brought the child to the marriage from a previous relationship. Also, there are some unique legal issues that we have encountered and that traditional marriages would never experience. For example, it is possible to have both a civil-union and a same-sex divorce, but dissolving one may not dissolve the other. These are interesting dynamics that have to be sorted out by an attorney qualified to help you with these issues.

Civil unions and/or same sex divorces can also be complicated, but we handle these often confusing matters as well. Another type of alternative relationship is a domestic partnership, which has its own set of complications and requirements when splitting up. However, we are also prepared to handle these types of cases. At the Women’s Divorce and Family Law Group we know that every family relationship is unique, whether it’s a traditional or nontraditional family unit. We can help families of all types with their family law needs, whether it’s a divorce or child custody issue, or anything else. Please contact us in Chicago at 312-445-8830, or click here.
