Ten Tips for Recovery After Divorce

Even if you and your spouse have been previously separated or going through a contentious marriage for some time, facing the reality of a divorce and the impact it has on your life afterward can be challenging. During this time, it is important to remember that you will recover, and the following tips can help facilitate that process.

‘Getting Over’ Your Divorce

No one enters a marriage expecting it to end in divorce, and there is no set time in which you are expected to ‘get over it’ or recover. Psychology Today states that factors which influence how long it will take to bounce back include your age, the length of the marriage, the circumstances surrounding the divorce, and the impact it has on your relationships with friends and family members. The following are five tips to help you through the process:

  • Acknowledge your feelings: Refusing to acknowledge feelings of grief and loss can negatively impact your emotional health and delay recovery.
  • Take things slow: Take time to adjust to your new status, and do not feel pressured to begin dating right away.
  • Talk to someone: Do not hesitate to consult with your doctor or a therapist if you are struggling with depression.
  • Lower your expectations: Unrealistic expectations will only lower your self-esteem.
  • Be good to yourself: Eat right, monitor your alcohol intake, and make sure you get enough fresh air and exercise.

Tips for Financial Recovery After Divorce

Divorce can jeopardize your financial security, and it can take time to adjust to your new situation. Entrepreneur recommends these additional tips for getting back on your feet:

  • Conserve your energy: Worrying over your financial situation does not help and only wastes energy that could be used in taking constructive actions.
  • Make a budget: Make an inventory of your income and assets. Using this information, create a reasonable budget and do your best to stick with it.
  • Re-establish your credit: Open a credit card or take out a loan in your name only. Making regular payments will help rebuild your credit.
  • Look for additional sources of income: Consider taking a part time job, or ask for a raise.
  • Learn a new skill: If your career, in general, does not pay enough, consider going back to school part time.
