Did you ever hear your parents say: “If only I knew then what I know now. Things would sure be different” when you were younger? Most of us have heard someone utter that phrase before. In fact, most of us have used it ourselves. The fact is hindsight is indeed 20/20 and we can’t change the past. However, the good news is we can also learn from those who have gone before us. This is true even in divorce. If you are considering divorce, then there are some things you’re going to want to know now before you start the process.

Learn From Others

Unless you’ve gone through a divorce before, then chances are you really don’t know what to expect if you are considering ending your marriage. Even if you’ve witnessed firsthand the divorce of a close relative or friend that still isn’t quite the same as going through a divorce yourself. However, you can definitely learn some important facts about divorce from those who have gone through it already. Here are some things that are good to know before you file for divorce:

  • Recovery is a process – no matter how bad your marriage or how long it lasted, recovering can be hard and it can take time. Everyone is different, but it’s OK if it takes a while for you to get over it.
  • Choose the right lawyer – many attorneys focus on a lot of different practice areas. Don’t hire an attorney who focuses on criminal law and does family law on the side. Hire a lawyer that handles cases in family law.
  • It’s about the money – about 40 percent of all divorces are about money. Make sure you have a detailed knowledge of all your finances, both joint and separate to ensure that you get a fair settlement. Also, make sure you know what your future living expenses will be and prepare for that lifestyle.
  • Don’t seek revenge – trying to hurt your spouse is not constructive and will most likely prolong the divorce and cost you more money.
  • Divorce doesn’t = failure – just because your marriage didn’t work out that does not mean you are a failure. There is hope and you can live a happy life.
  • Keep a close eye on your kids – your kids might not tell you how they really feel, but their actions will speak volumes, so pay close attention to how they act and react. Be prepared for the holidays to be tough, too, especially for the kids.
  • Divorce can be liberating – lastly, divorce can in many cases give you newfound freedom from the all the negatives aspects of your marriage. Embrace those new opportunities whole-heartedly.
