Vernon Hills Family Law Lawyers

Happy Mixed Race Son Enjoys a Piggy Back Ride in the Park with Dad.Family law is more than just divorces. Although it includes divorce and related topics, it is a very broad legal area that also includes prenuptial agreements and other parts of pre-divorce planning, establishing parenting plans and child support orders, and managing issues related to modifying previous court orders and bridging the intersections of divorce and other legal areas, like business law when a divorcing individual is a small business owner.

Our team understands that it is rare for a family law case to fit neatly into one of the above categories. Often, a divorce involves a parenting plan, a child support order, and special considerations regarding the couple’s assets. Our approach considers all of the issues present in your divorce to provide you with dynamic, personalized legal counsel and representation.

Family Law Matters We Handle

Many different types of cases fall under the family law umbrella. Our team handles the following:

  • Divorces. When a couple determines their marriage is over, they can legally end it through a divorce. A divorce can have many moving parts, such as establishing a parenting plan, a child support order, and a spousal maintenance order as well as dividing the couple’s assets;
  • Pre-divorce Planning. These are the steps a couple takes before filing for divorce, such as itemizing their marital assets and determining whether they are candidates for an uncontested divorce. It can also involve drafting a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. These are outlines of the couple’s finances during their marriage and how their assets are to be divided in the event of a divorce or one partner’s death;
  • Child Support. In Illinois, the court uses a specific formula to develop most child support orders. When the family’s income is far outside the ranges included in the formula or there are special issues at play, such as a child’s severe disability, the court may determine a child support amount another way. This is the money paid from one parent to the other to help cover the costs of raising their child, such as housing, utilities, childcare, and school supplies;
  • Parenting Plans. Once known as “custody,” a parenting plan is the order parents must follow regarding their child’s time in each household and their parental responsibilities following their divorce; and
  • Modification of existing family court orders. When a parenting plan, spousal maintenance order, or child support is no longer effective for the people it involves, it can be modified with help from an experienced family lawyer.
