Libertyville Family Law Attorney

Mother feeding her baby with spoon. Mother giving healthy food to her adorable child at homeMany different legal issues fall into the family law category. Anything that has to do with a marriage, a divorce, or raising children is part of this legal category. Because family law issues have to do with close family relationships, they can be considerably more emotionally frustrating than other civil cases. When you are working through a divorce or another family law proceeding, it is important that you work with an experienced family lawyer who can be your advocate and provide you with the legal counsel, representation, and support you need.

Family Law Cases We Handle

Our team handles a variety of family law cases. We work with divorced and divorcing couples as well as couples in domestic partnerships and civil unions. Members of our firm also have experience handling business law cases. When you are facing a legal issue that involves elements of business and family law, such as a divorce between two small business owners, we draw upon our experience in both categories to provide you with effective, personalized legal counsel.

We work with clients facing the following:

  • Establishing, modifying, and enforcing parenting plans. Parenting plans are the court ordered guidelines that determine how much time a child spends in each parent’s home and when he or she spends that time and each parent’s responsibilities for the child after their divorce. Previously, this was known as child custody;
  • Establishing, modifying, and enforcing child support orders. Child support is the money one parent pays to the other to help with the costs of raising a child, such as the child’s educational and personal needs. Often, a child support order and a parenting plan are part of a couple’s divorce settlement;
  • Divorce. When a couple determines their marriage cannot be salvaged, they may choose to legally dismantle it through divorce. In addition to the child-related issues listed above, a couple must have their marital assets divided according to the doctrine of equitable distribution. In some cases, a spousal maintenance order is also part of a divorce settlement; and
  • Pre-divorce planning. There are two main ways our firm helps couples with pre-divorce planning. We work with couples to craft valid prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. These are documents that outline a couple’s financial life during their marriage and how their assets are to be divided in the event of a divorce or one partner’s death. We also provide a pre-divorce planning service, which is a type of counseling session through which we answer client’s questions and help them prepare for the divorce process by getting the necessary paperwork in order and protecting their interests.

Do not attempt to manage your family law issues on your own. Instead, work with an experienced family lawyer who can act as your advocate and guide you toward the choices that are in your best interest.
