Mother feeding her baby with spoon. Mother giving healthy food to her adorable child at homeAny time you are facing a legal proceeding related to a close family relationship, you are dealing with family law. Family law is a broad legal area with many subcategories, all of which have to do with relationships between spouses, former spouses, parents and their children, and in some cases, other family members.

When you are facing or considering a process in the family law category, it is in your best interest to work with an experienced family lawyer. Your lawyer is your advocate, so it is important to work with one who understands the specific circumstances of your case. Our team handles the following types of family law case.

Divorce and Related Issues

We work with clients through each step of the divorce process, from filing their initial divorce petitions to handling the legal difficulties that can arise after a divorce is finalized. Every divorce involves the division of the couple’s marital assets, which can be a fairly straightforward process or it can be quite complicated, especially if the couple has a large asset pool or assets that cannot be easily valued. Other processes that can be part of a divorce include establishing a parenting plan, establishing a child support order, and establishing a spousal maintenance order.

Before a couple divorces, our team can work with them to take steps that make the divorce process easier. These include:

  • Prenuptial agreements. This type of document outlines how a couple’s marital assets are to be divided in their divorce or in the event of one partner’s death. It can also outline how the couple will manage their finances during the marriage. It is signed before the couple marries;
  • Postnuptial agreements. This type of document is virtually identical to a prenuptial agreement, except the couple signs it after they are married; and
  • Pre-divorce planning. This is a type of counseling our firm offers to individuals considering divorce. During a pre-divorce planning session, we answer the client’s questions and help him or her determine the next step in the divorce process, which could be separating his or her finances from his or her spouse’s or drafting a parenting plan.

Other Family Law Topics

Sometimes, parenting plans and child support orders exist without a divorce. Often, this is because the child’s parents were never married. Whether the parents were in a civil union, a domestic partnership, or simply cohabitated and then ended their relationship, we can help them with their child-related legal needs as well as any additional legal issues they face, such as dividing their shared assets. For all parenting plans, regardless of whether the child’s parents were married, the child’s best interest ranks above all other considerations.
