Many have recently heard stories involving Ashley Madison, an online website for married people who would like to have an extra-marital affair. That website was hacked earlier this year and the client list made public in August, and the news for Illinois is grim. Illinois made the “Top Twenty” list that no state wants to be on – the list of top twenty most unfaithful states. Illinois rests at number 12 on this infamous list.
Many of the Chicago suburbs have a high percentage of Ashley Madison clients. The more affluent the community, the more likely to be found on the list. The Village of Burr Ridge, an upscale town of only 10,000 residents, 75% of whom are married, ranked highest of all the Chicago communities as percentage registered on Ashley Madison. Following the Village of Burr Ridge, Plainfield, LaGrange, Oak Lawn, Deerfield and St. Charles have the greatest concentration per capita of unfaithful spouses on the Ashley Madison roster.
Infidelity irrevocably damages marriage. That is not to say that divorce is inevitable, but at a minimum it causes serious heartache and strife between the spouses and against known third parties. Luckily for any third parties implicated by the Ashley Madison list, so-called heart balm actions like alienation of affection or adultery claims, brought by a spouse against a third party, will be abolished as of January 1, 2016, minimizing any fallout from the database to third parties. However, if your spouse is on the list, you are going to likely want to do something in response.
If you are concerned that your spouse is on the Ashley Madison list, you should contact a competent and compassionate family law attorney. We can begin by helping you search the database and determine if your fears are even warranted. Even if your spouse is found on the list, that does not automatically mean you wish to get a divorce. If you do, however, we can help you obtain one, and you can seek one based on adultery grounds, if that is your desire. If you are located in the Chicago metro area, the Lake Forest area, or in Lyle and would like to discuss your legal options, please contact our offices today to schedule a courtesy consultation.
